“J” Litter
born September 20, 2023
My Fall 2023 litter is here! Born September 20th, this litter has eleven puppies – eight males and three females.
The sire to my puppies is the stunningly handsome V-1 SG-17 (BSZS) Hanco von Melanchthon. He was imported from Germany fully titled with IPO 2, KKL 1, ‘a’ normal certified hips and elbows and is Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) clear. He has a huge masculine head, a very correct sturdy structure and a beautiful thick coat. I love the puppies he’s producing!
The dam is my lovely black and red female Luna vom Tanhäuser. She also has a wonderful temperament, beautiful pigment and structure. She has OFA certified good hips and elbows normal. She is DM clear.
The puppies will leave for their forever homes starting November 15th.
NOTE: Tannhäuser uses alphabetic litter identifiers. Those run continuously from A to Z and then restart. These are not reset on year boundaries. Puppies born to a particular litter have owner-specified AKC names starting with the litter ID letter. A dog’s registered name and call name do not have to be the same. The dog’s call name is fully owner determined. For example, one of my puppies in a past “E” litter was registered as “Elijah vom Tanhäuser II” but his call name is “Bowie”.
How My Puppies Are Cared for and Evaluated
All my litters are born in my home in a room just off my bedroom where I can monitor each litter. They stay with me 24 hours a day at this stage. Puppies cannot regulate their body heat so for the first week they must be kept very warm.
Once they are up and walking, they are getting too big for the whelping box. At that point, I move them to my puppy room that is temperature-controlled. This happens when they are about 3 weeks of age. Here they have soft blankets for bedding and a potty box. I potty box train them and they grow and play in this area. At about 5 weeks they are big enough to go outside and play (weather permitting). Each night they go back in their puppy room before dark where they are comfortable and secure for the night.
They always get high quality dry food mixed with high quality canned food and goat’s milk.
Before they are ready for their forever homes, each are given a full health check by a veterinarian. They are also microchipped (Home Again), wormed, given their first Distemper – Parvovirus vaccination and are temperament tested.
My Guarantees
Each of these guarantees will be provided in writing to my customers in my puppy purchase agreement.
Health Guarantee
Each puppy has been planned, bred and raised with care and love, and should be free of serious health problems of a genetic nature. Each puppy is examined by a licensed veterinarian and found to be in good health before they are sent to their forever homes.
Lifetime Support
Any time any of my customers need support, I’m here. No question or problem is too small. If you need to contact me for advice or information, please always feel free to do so.
Forever Home Guarantee
If a TANNHÄUSER dog cannot be kept by their families for any reason during their lives they can be returned to TANNHÄUSER, a home they are already familiar with.
In keeping with my commitment to my dogs, this ensures none of my dogs end up in shelters where they might be euthanized or moved from home to home. They will stay with me or I will find them an approved home with a loving family. I am here, always, to make sure that their lives are happy, healthy and respected.
How To Reserve A Puppy
- Consultation – contact me to discuss the availability of puppies, the fit of a German Shepherd Dog for your household, lifestyle or any other questions you might have.
- Application – when you’re sure, I have an application for all prospective dog parents. It is extremely important to me that each of my puppies spend their lives in wonderful forever homes. Potential buyers should be prepared to answer questions about their home, lifestyle, experience with dogs and why they want a German Shepherd Dog.
- Pick Up or Delivery – it’s wonderful if you are in our area and can pick up your puppy so we can meet in person. But if you’re not, I can ship your puppy anywhere in the U.S. for easy, convenient pick up! Shipping puppies is relatively inexpensive because the shipping cost is determined by weight. I make all of the arrangements for you!
TANNHÄUSER is experienced with all aspects of shipping puppies. It is important to inquire about shipping practices with any breeder you are considering.
I ensure that all airline rules are adhered to. Puppies are shipped in a hard-sided crate that is properly sized for a German Shepherd puppy. The puppies are crate-trained before their flight. This ensures the crate is a positive experience and they are far less stressed on the flight. I always look for direct flights with airlines that properly care for their animal passengers. These airlines ensure these special passengers are kept securely in appropriate spaces at reasonable temperatures. My crates are equipped with plush rugs that fit perfectly like wall-to-wall carpeting and a cool dish by Petmate where water can be added from outside the crate. This is important because airlines will zip tie the crates shut.
If it is a shorter flight, I do prefer that new owners fly out and take the puppy in the cabin home with them. In this case, I will provide a soft carrier that will fit under the seat.
What Goes Home With Your Puppy
Each of my puppies goes to their forever homes with the following:
- AKC papers. Please be prepared to choose a registered name starting with the litter letter identifier (A-Z) and ending in “vom Tanhäuser”. The call name for your dog is entirely up to you.
- microchip (information provided to transfer ownership to you thru Home Again)
- first Distemper-Parvovirus vaccine
- first deworming medications
- health record from birth
- veterinarian health check record
- written contract with guarantees

What To Expect With Your Puppy
There are so many questions with a new puppy! They need ‘stuff’ and you wonder how to get them home safely and then come questions on raising and training them. While I’m always here as a resource for you, I hope information below will get you started.
To give you some idea on how your puppy will grow, I created a timeline. This is a work in progress but I believe it will give you some great information on your maturing pup.
Check that you have the items below ready when your new companion comes to keep them safe and happy! This list, notes on bringing your puppy home, and more can be found here in a PDF you can download and print.
In general, this what you need for your brand new companion:
- Safe place to play and sleep – Dog crates / kennels and playpens give puppies a secure place to rest and play. Please note that puppies need to be crate-trained. They will not immediately be comfortable in a crate or kennel but with proper training, they’ll consider this their happy place.
- A supply of healthy food, treats and chews – I feed my dogs Fromm Gold food. I recommend that you always look for nutritious items that do not contain unnecessary, highly processed ingredients. Watch carefully when chews get small to prevent your puppy from choking.
- Sturdy collar, harness and leash
- Food and water bowls
- Play and chew toys – German Shepherd Dogs, even as puppies, are hard on toys in all kinds of ways. They are smart, determined and very focused. Avoid toys that have small parts that can get chewed off and swallowed.
My specific product recommendations (and some from my customers as well) are included in my SHOP pages.
Tannhäuser does not sell online. I’ve provided links to where you can purchase the listed items as a resource. These recommendations come from long experience with what works for German Shepherd Dogs. I believe you will find that purchasing top quality products will not only benefit your puppy and family, but save you money long run.
